What constitutes a close contact has often been a somewhat arbitrary definition. In this study, three different types of household contacts were examined in regards to their risk of becoming infected following contact with an index case in the same household.  As expected, intimate contacts (spending the night in the same room) are at the highest risk.

It is noteworthy that among sporadic household contacts the prevalence of infection did not differ from that found in the general population.
