When the Director of the then WHO's Global Tuberculosis Programme announced the new tuberculosis control strategy, later to became known as the DOTS strategy, this table was published.

It summarizes the then estimated level (intercept) and trend (slope) in the annual risk of tuberculous infection in four large groups of regions and countries of the world. It shows also that those areas with the most favorable epidemiologic situation had also the best health resource availability, while those with the worst epidemiologic situation also had the least health resource availability.

Meanwhile, the picture has become even more grim, as the epidemiologic situation in some sub-Saharan countries is deteriorating, and health resources are getting even more stretched.
