Rifamycin SV is one of the rifamycin antibiotics isolated from Streptomyces mediterranei in 1957. It is active only parenterally. The orally active rifampicin was obtained through synthetic modification. Rifampicin has a broad spectrum against bacteria but it is its activity against M. tuberculosis that is the most remarkable and important.
