Rifampicin is rapidly absorbed after oral ingestion and reaches a peak after two hours.  Much lower peak levels are reached after a high-fat meal but not after high-protein or high-carbohydrate meals.

As it is commonly heard, patients are still told not to eat before they have taken there drugs. This pahrmacokinetic study shows that this is false information. Patients may very well eat a breakfeast that is not all too rich in fat.
