Because the armamentarium of efficacious anti-tuberculosis drugs is very limited, preventing the emergence of resistance through incorrect treatment is critical. The acquisition of resistance by M. tuberculosis is always through a selection of already existing mutants, but these may be selected by different mechanisms.
