The early bactericidal activity varies for different drugs. Among the essential drugs, isoniazid is the one with the highest early bactericidal activity. Isoniazid-susceptible bacilli are thus killed more rapidly than isoniazid-resistant bacilli. If treatment is stopped after this initial killing, isoniazid-resistant mutants have thus an advantage during regrowth.
