To further pursue the issue of rifampicin monotherapy in the continuation phase a small digression is warranted. Rifapentine belongs to the rifamycins like rifampicin. It is microbiologically comparable to rifampicin, has cross-resistance with it, but differs importantly in its pharmacokinetic properties with a much longer serum half-life. This property makes it an appealing substance for widely spaced intermittent chemotherapy that would greatly facilitate direct observation of treatment.
