Although the evidence of efficacy is thin, it is probably indicated to provide prophylactic treatment to newborns if at birth the mother is diagnosed as having potentially infectious tuberculosis. In some industrialized countries other groups of uncontrollably exposed persons have been identified to whom prophylactic treatment is being prescribed.

Overall, prophylactic treatment is by its very nature playing a minor role in tuberculosis control.
