It is widely known that protection afforded by BCG varies considerably. In order to better elucidate the differences observed in various trials, four distinct groups will be reviewed separately.

The first group reviews the protective effect of BCG against tuberculosis resulting from dissemination such as miliary tuberculosis, tuberculous meningitis and death from tuberculosis. The other three groups concern the protective effect of BCG in various age groups.
