These four controlled clinical trials investigated the efficacy of preventive therapy with isoniazid in reducing the risk of tuberculosis among persons with presumed long-standing tuberculous infection. The risk in such persons is small, the number of cases emerging during the treatment year was small and the 95% confidence intervals thus wide. In all but the Greenland study, protection was 60 per cent and more.
