If the anterior part of the vertebra is affected, the bone structure becomes necrotic (left) and subsequently the vertebra collapses and the patient develops the characteristic gibbus.

The paradiscal region is affected on the right, resulting in collapse and a narrowing of the intervertebral space suggesting narrowing of the disc.
