Disseminated tuberculosis has emerged as a substantial and fatal manifestation of tuberculosis among HIV infected patients. The diagnosis is exceedingly difficult to make and required here blood cultures among patients presenting with a fever. In several autopsy studies in Africa, disseminated tuberculosis was present in 30% to 40% of patients who died with HIV infection, most likely the cause of death or at least a contributory cause.
