The addition of isoniazid to streptomycin and para-amino salicylic acid made tuberculosis in patients with organisms susceptible to these drugs curable in the 1950ies as demonstrated in this report from Edinburgh in Scotland.

Sir John Crofton (deceased 2009) was always a stout supporter of The Union's work. In addition to his seminal work on tuberculosis, he co-authored the first report on smoking and lung cancer in the large cohort studye among British medical doctors in 1954 and co-authored to 50-year follow-up (!) of this study in 2004. The above two pictures were taken from the Br Med J which honored his accomplishments in the fight against tobacco.
