BCG is given by intradermal injection. In persons not previously sensitized to mycobacteria,  a pustule forms, approximately three weeks after vaccination. Complete healing with a scar takes about three months.

BCG vaccination elicits a primary complex and small adjacent lymphadenopathy is the rule and a normal reaction. If an abscess forms, it might be drained. Chemotherapy is not indicated unless there is osteomyelitis or systemic disease.
