Several prospective studies have been conducted to assess protection afforded by BCG against tuberculosis in infants. The majority of cases ascertained had intrathoracic tuberculosis.

Again, the majority of trials is clearly on the protective side, although the extent of protection appears to be generally inferior compared to that against meningeal and other disseminated forms of tuberculosis.
