The range of protection from BCG in prospective studies among adults was very wide. The study from Ulleval does not quite fit the requirements of modern trial concept because allocation was by self-selection. In two studies there were actually more cases of tuberculosis among the vaccinated than among the non-vaccinated although the 95% confidence intervals do not prove actual harm.
