Among several studies, this one was conducted among police officers in Dar es Salaam who attended for counseling and testing for HIV. Of all with positive results, only about 40% returned to obtain their test results. Among those returning perhaps 60% accepted preventive chemotherapy in principle, but less than half of these were actuall evaluated. Importantly, among the 37 out of the original cohort o 400 HIV-infected patients, 8 had asymptomatic, but sputum smear-positive tuberculosis! Of those without tuberculosis, most were started on chemotherapy, but less than half of them completed even the (too short) six-month course. Clearly, the intervention here was not effective. |
