Not only coughing by the source case predicts the risk of a susceptible person to become infected, the presence of sputum is also a strong predictor. In terms of making the diagnosis of transmissible tuberculosis this is important as a bacteriologic examination will require a specimen that is easier obtainable if the patients produces sputum spontanteously.
