HIV is the strongest yet identified risk factor for progression from latent tuberculous infection to tuberculosis.
There are several studies that have evaluated HIV as a risk factor for tuberculosis among persons with tuberculous infection. The results of three are shown here.
The first study was in New York City among tuberculin-positive injection drug users enrolled in a methadone maintenance program. The risk was about 8 per 100 person-years.
In the multi-center study in Italy, the risk of HIV infected, tuberculin-positive patients to develop tuberculosis was about 5 per 100 person-years.
In the multi-center study in Spain, the risk of HIV infected, tuberculin-positive patients to develop tuberculosis was about 16 per 100 person-years. |
