Dr Karel Styblo, Director of the Tuberculosis Surveillance and Research Unit, and Director of The Union's Department of Scientific Activities developed what is now know as the "DOTS Strategy" of tuberculosis control in collaboration with national health authorities in a number of countries, notably in Africa but estended to other regions. This work was accomplished and documented in the decade from 1978 to 1988.
