In the first ever conducted randomized clinical trial, streptomycin monotherapy (the only drug available) was used and compared to a group of patients not receiving streptomycin. Among patients excreting bacilli it was observed that an increasing proportion excreted a streptomycin-resistant strain with increasing duration of treatment.
