Mycobacteria reproduce by cell division. In each strain of suscepible bacilli a certain (small) proportion is spontaneously resistant to any drug. In the absence of the drug pressure, mutants often have some disadvantages, but the resulting slower replication time cannot be seen on the linear scale in which this is depicted here
