To prevent emergence of resistance mutants, more than one drug is given so that each can kill mutants resistant to the other drug. This is schematically shown here for isoniazid and rifampicin. Both drugs kill the large number of bacilli that are susceptible to both drugs. Isoniazid cannot kill isoniazid-resistan mutants but they will be killed by rifampicin, and vice versa.
