Because of the potential of selecting resistance against rifampicin with monotherapy in the continuation phase of the retreatment regimen, The Union recommended using pyrazinamide throughout the continuation phase if ethambutol was part of the continuation phase in the first-line regimen. It was not known whether this was efficacious nor how well it was tolerated. In fact, only very few countries ever used this apporach.
