In Sweden, the laboratory isolation of environmental mycobacteria is notifiable.  Subsequent ot the cessation of BCG vacination in Sweden, the number of cases of peripheral mycobacterial lymphadenopathy due to M. avium complex increased sharply. This clearly indicates that BCG had provided protection against disease due to this environmental mycobacterium. Very similar observations were made in the Czech Republic. It is conceivable that the inverse is also possible, i.e., that certain mycobacteria protect against tuberculosis and thus partially mask the effect of BCG vaccination.
