Because of its unique property in reducing the required duration of treatment in active tuberculosis, it was natural to investigate its value in preventive therapy as well.  Rifampicin containing regimens were evaluated among patients with HIV infection and silicosis compared to placebo. The variation in risk reduction varied widely, most likely largely attributable to various levels of adherence.
