Toxic epidermal necrolysis is the most important and often fatal adverse event from thioacetazone.

The causal relationship between cutaneous adverse events, HIV, and thioacetazone has been clearly demonstrated: cutaneous adverse drug events occurred virtually only in HIV infected patients and amongst these only among those treated with thioacetazone. As a result, an increasing number of countries have abandoned the use of the drug and it is now virtually no more used in any country.
